What you will learn

Are you dreaming of leaving your current job and moving to the countryside to start a new life?  Not sure where to start or do you wonder if a smallholding can actually provide you with a living? If so, then this is the course for you.

Sally and Adrian have owned a smallholding for more than 20 years and for the last 8 years they have taught  smallholder courses at Empire Farm and Sally writes for smallholding magazines.  Now they have put together an intensive 3-day course covering a wide range of topics for the would-be smallholder. This course takes you from the initial steps of  finding a smallholding, through the paperwork and planning, different types of enterprise, keeping  animals, business planning,  to creating a brand and marketing.

Content

Day 1 An introduction to smallholding: How much land do you need, buy or rent, capital costs, essential equipment. Different types of enterprise, planning, buildings and equipment, essential paperwork. Practical session on electric fencing and keeping poultry for eggs and meat. Pigs

Day 2 Managing the land: rotations, building fertility, growing crops, companion planting, fodder and forage crops.  Polytunnels.  Growing  flowers  and herbs for sale. Keeping sheep and goats. Animal welfare. Taking animals to slaughter. Practical session

The afternoon session on sheep can be purchased separately

Day 3 Business plans, Making and selling product:  we look at processing your own products and selling. Who do you need to contact – trading standards, EHOs. etc Food hygiene legislation. Pros and cons of direct selling. Sourcing ingredients,  costings and, labeling regulations. Marketing your brand via social media and websites.

 

Administration

The numbers on this courses are limited to approx. 12  people so that there is plenty of opportunity to discuss specific topics of interest. Part of this course takes place outside so warm weatherproof clothing and wellington boots are needed, plus a change of shoes.

The course runs from 10 am to 4.00 pm Wednesday to Friday.  Included in the cost of the course is all refreshments, lunch and afternoon tea.  At the end of the course everybody will be provided with a copy of the presentations and other information on a USB data stick

The cost of  the three-day course  is £230.

Please note that the cost of accommodation is NOT included. There are a number of places to stay locally including B&Bs, pubs, and small hotels. Or you could take a self-catering cottage for the weekend and enjoy a week away.
