Smallholder Day

This is an intensive day covering a wealth of topics. Its ideal for people thinking about making that step into buying or renting land.

Sally Morgan starts the day with a look at the pros and cons of buying land or renting, what to look for, the absolute essentials, the desirables and things to avoid, issues associated with planning, plus all the regulations and records that you have to keep. Land management, hedging, pasture, rotations, weed control are all covered, as well as essential equipment.

The session on livestock looks at keeping poultry, sheep, goats, pigs and cattle - setting up, purchase of stock, costs, profits, and ways of selling produce. Polytunnels and vegetable growing is included too. [Note we do not go into the detail of keeping livestock on this course].

As well as a tour of Empire Farm, Sally presents case studies of a number of smallholdings to give attendees plenty of ideas to take away.
