Course Tutor is Alan Berry of Blackmore Vale Cider What you will learn This is a three-hour afternoon session. First Alan introduces you to the basics of making apple juice - the apples, and the equipment you need. He demonstrates the whole process including the crushing of the fruit, followed by pressing. He shows you how to pasteurise bottles enabling you to keep the apple juice for up to a year. The afternoon ends ends with afternoon tea and cake. We will have apples here, but if you would like to make juice from your own apples you are welcome to bring them along. When collecting apples for juicing make sure you pick them from the tree, and not from the ground. Give them rinse and bring them in a bag. About three carrier bags of apples will be sufficient to fill the hopper so you have a whole batch of your own apples going through the process. Please bring along a bottle to take away your apple juice. We will also have a selection of bottles here for purchase if you prefer. Administration The course starts at 2 pm and finishes at about 5 pm. Part of the afternoon is spent outside preparing the apples, so warm clothing and outdoor shoes are recommended. Apple juicing can get a bit mucky. We provide aprons but you are advised to wear old clothes. Everybody gets to take away a set of notes and some apple juice. Dates for 2010 to be confirmed. |
