Chickens

We keep a range of chickens, both traditional breeds and hybrids.

Amongst the traditional pure breeds are Welsummers, Light Sussex, Buff and Black Orpingtons, Dark and Gold Brahma, Lavender Araucana (a blue egg laying breed), French Copper Maran, Silver-laced Wyandotte and Polish bantams.

Our large fowl can be kept for both egg and meat.

The cockerels, especially the Welsummers, produce a good meat, although they grow more slowly than commercial hybrids.

In addition, we have some hybrid egg layers such as White Star, Bluebell, and Black Rock and a selection of meat chickens including Mastergris, Poulet Bronze and Farm Ranger.
