Course Tutor is Alan Berry of Blackmore Vale Cider What you will learn This is a three-hour afternoon session. First Alan introduces you to the basics of making cider - the different types of cider apples, and the equipment you will need. He demonstrates the whole process including the preparation of the fruit, followed by milling and pressing. The afternoon ends ends with afternoon tea and cake. We will have apples here, but if you would like to make cider from your own apples you are welcome to bring them along. When collecting cider apples, you can use windfalls so long as they are just bruised but not rotten. About three carrier bags of apples will be sufficient to fill the hopper so you have a whole batch of your own apples going through the process. If you would like to take away some cider to finish at home, please bring along a demijohn, fermentation lock and bung (all sterilised). We will also have some here for purchase if you prefer. Administration The course starts at 2 pm and finishes at about 5 pm. Part of the afternoon is spent outside preparing the apples, so warm clothing and outdoor shoes are recommended. The process can get a bit mucky. We provide aprons and gloves but you are advised to wear old clothes. Notes will be provided. |
